Customers' Questions

What do I do when my bin is full?

It`s surprising how much you can fit into the ECOmpostertm, because the volume of material reduces as it breaks down into compost, creating more spaces. However, you may reach a point where you can`t fit any more into the ECOmpostertm.  You may find that some of the material in the ECOmpostertm has already composted, so this can be removed and used on the garden. If not, leave the ECOmpostertm for a couple of weeks and you should have more space. If you`ve got so much material that you fill the ECOmpostertm every 2 or 3 weeks, your best bet is to get a second ECOmpostertm!

What is compost?

Compost is decomposed organic material that is produced when bacteria already in soil break down biodegradable trash, household garbage, most organic waste, even newspapers.   The result is a finished product rich in minerals that is an ideal garden or landscaping propagator.

How do I know that my compost is ready?

·        When finished it should look, feel and smell like rich, dark soil. You should not be able to recognize any of the items you put in there.

·        Finished compost is usually less than half the volume of the materials you started with, but it`s much denser.

Apply finished compost to your garden about 2-4 weeks before you plant, giving the compost time to integrate and stabilize within the soil.

Where can I purchase Ecomposter?

The ECOmposter can be purchased from a number of our retailers.  Please go to our where to buy Tab to see a listing.

Do I have to be concerned with smell from my ECOmposter?

In most cases no.  The design and the shape actually help to keep the decomposing material’s odors to a minimum.  We also do not recommend meat or fish be put in the  ECOmpostertm for this reason.

Why does compost need air and water?
Compost is full of living things (microorganisms, earthworms, insects, and other creatures) that need air, water, and nutrients to function. A compost pile needs to be fluffy so that there are plenty of spaces (what scientists call pores) for air to move about. Occasionally rotating your your  ECOmpostertm  re-fluffs the material, moves new material into the center, and helps improve airflow into the pile.  Compost microbes also need the right amount of water. Too much moisture reduces airflow, causes temperatures to fall, and can make the pile smell bad; too little water slows decomposition and prevents the pile from heating.  The compost should feel like a damp sponge.

How can I speed up decomposition?

·        Shred, chop, or chip ingredients. Smaller pieces of material have more surfaces for microorganisms to work on, so your pile decomposes faster.   The optimal size is from 1 to 1.5 inches.

·        Compost material will not heat up if it`s too small.  The more material the better the ECOmpostertm will work.

·        Mix your ingredients.   The material should be more like a tossed salad than a layer cake.   The rotating feature of the ECOmpostertm makes this process simple and enjoyable.

·        Aerate your compost material.  The more you turn ECOmpostertm the faster you`ll get results.

·        Monitor moisture. Dry piles decompose slowly, so adjust moisture as needed.

·        Add some microbes. Mix in a shovelful of finished compost or garden soil to get the microbial activity rolling.
